Overview of Volunteer Opportunities for New and Experienced Volunteers at UPC
PADS Set-Up (Adults and Youth)
Time Commitment: 4:30-5:50 p.m., Thursday (once per month or as scheduled)
Requirements:
- Follow directions of adult supervisor.
- Store church items not used for PADS according to checklist directions.
- Set up dining, sleeping, and video areas in Fellowship Hall.
- Make all pads.
- Set up hallway, registration, and TV viewing areas.
Kitchen Set-Up (Adults) – Currently filled
Time Commitment: 4:30-6 p.m., Thursday (once per month)
Requirements:
- Follow directions of Onsite Food Coordinator.
- Prepare kitchen service, food and drinks for evening meal.
Kitchen Serve Volunteer Supervisor (Adults) – Currently filled
Time Commitment: 6-9 p.m., Thursday (once per month)
Requirements:
- Supervise three or four high school youth.
- Use checklist provided to guide them in required tasks of finishing preparations for evening meal, cleaning up after meal, preparing and serving snack and meal for late arrivals, cleaning kitchen when done.
Kitchen Serve Volunteers: High School Youth – Currently filled
Time Commitment: 6-9 p.m., Thursday (once per month)
Requirements:
- Follow directions of Onsite Food Coordinator and Youth Supervisor.
- Follow guidelines for Youth at the Sites.
- Follow checklist to do tasks listed for finishing preparations for evening meal, cleaning up after meal, preparing and serving snack and meal for late arrivals, cleaning kitchen when done.
First Shift (Adults) – need substitutes and may need a replacement
Time Commitment: 5:30-11 p.m., Thursday (once per month)
Requirements:
- Follow checklist for job(s) to which you are assigned for the evening.
- Follow PADS and UPC rules and procedures.
- Specific tasks for all volunteers vary according to assigned position, but may include assigning pads, clothing lottery, clothing or toiletries distribution, monitoring and visiting with guests in site areas, cleaning tables and sweeping floors, etc.
- Male volunteers are also assigned to monitor smoke breaks, escort guests to and from AA meetings and do periodic building checks.
Second Shift (Adults) – need one male second week and substitutes
Time Commitment: 11 p.m. to 3 a.m., Thursday/Friday (once per month)
Requirements:
- Call site at least 15 minutes before 11 p.m. to notify leaders that you will be arriving.
- Follow directions of shift leader.
- Monitor guests in sleeping and bathroom areas.
- Do building checks.
- Check and prepare lunches for guests.
Third Shift (Adults) – may need one person first week and need substitutes
Time Commitment: 3-7 a.m., Friday (once per month)
Requirements
- Call site at least 15 minutes before scheduled to work to notify that you will be arriving
- Follow directions of shift leader.
- Follow checklist for job(s) to which you’re assigned.
- Monitor guests in sleeping and bathroom areas.
- Prepare and serve breakfast and give a lunch to each guest.
- Clean and store pillows and pads; fold and put away blankets.
- Put all PADS chairs, tables and other equipment into proper areas.
- Put bags of used linens and towels/washcloths into proper areas for pickup.
- Clean all site areas and mop floors: Kitchen, Fellowship Hall, hallway, bathrooms.
- Set up site areas for upcoming church programs/functions.
General Site Cleanup Shift – (Adults) and need substitutes
Time Commitment: 4:45-7 a.m. Friday (once per month) may need one person
Requirements
- Call site at least 15 minutes before you’re scheduled to work to notify that you’ll be arriving.
- Follow directions of shift leader.
- Follow checklist for job(s) to which you’re assigned.
- Any tasks listed under third shift may be assigned to the General Site Cleanup Shift volunteer.
Morning Kitchen Cleanup Shift (Adults) – Currently filled
Time Commitment: 6-7:30 a.m., Friday (once per month or as scheduled)
Requirements
- Call site at least 15 minutes before you’re scheduled to work to notify that you’ll be arriving.
- Follow directions on checklist for Morning Kitchen Cleanup
- Clean and put away coffee pots and other items used for PADS.
- Clean kitchen cabinets and rest of kitchen area and mop floor.
- Take out garbage and take recycling offsite.
